Every school year, Brentsville brings students from the Special Education Program together to participate on a basketball team. They travel from school to school, including BDHS, to play in games against other unified teams.

As of December 11th, the unified team is undefeated and going strong. The team was developed years ago by Mrs. Tousha and a teacher from Patriot High School. It started out with BDHS versing Patriot, but from then on it expanded throughout the county. Now Forest Park, Battlefield, Woodbridge, and many other schools have unified teams.

Sophomore through senior students are given the opportunity to participate on the team. They take time out of their day to support the team and be involved in the game.

“I enjoy assisting the team and watching them having fun”, commented sophomore Katie Frizzle. “It’s something that they don’t get to do every day”.

Students sign up to participate and watch the kids succeed and enjoy themselves playing the sport. “If you have time, patience, and work well with kids, this is the perfect opportunity for you to partake in”, suggested senior Mackenzie Ringer. “This opportunity is amazing and allows people to experience what it’s like to help the community”, added sophomore Nolan Clarke.

With the support of our community, unified teams have permeated throughout the county. The support they obtain, and the students participating, grow each year. This program has given the Special Ed students the opportunity to be part of a team and grow a new family.
