The Boys

The Boys is an Amazon Prime TV show that was created in 2019. The series currently has two seasons completed and has received exceptional reviews from platforms across the internet.
The show follows two main groups throughout the episodes, one being Annie January, played by Erin Moriarty, and the heroes that work for the Superhero company known as Vought. The other is a group of misfits being led by Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban, and Hughie Campbell, Jack Quaid. Throughout the show, Annie slowly but surely finds out that The Seven are not entirely as good as she thought they were when one members of The Seven offers to have sex with her after they had just met and learns that another member stays in the woman’s bathroom and spies on her without her knowledge.
The group of misfits is made up of a group of five people with all of them having various reasons to expose the corruption within Vought. Each person having a unique set of skills that is needed at one point or another in the show. The group has a very diverse set of characters and has a more comedic tone within the show.
What sets the show apart from other superhero shows is its unique style of humor. The show’s witty humor does not seem forced and instead seems to come naturally because of the characteristics of each of the characters. The show’s does a good job to make the humor extreme but not over the top.
The Boys surprisingly also touches on some social problems we have today. For example, in the first season Annie is asked to trade in her original costume and wear a tighter and revealing costume instead. This could show how the movie industry gets away with over sexualizing women with the excuse that it shows that woman is “comfortable with her body” or “shows empowerment” when it instead used to grab the attention of the “male gaze” as some may say.
Of course, these series are not for everyone. The show is quite gory and handles some heavy topics today. However, with a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems that many viewers generally enjoyed the show. If The Boys can continue to have success, than it may be a show that will be talked about for years to come.
