“BitterSweet” By Michelle Portillo Aguiar

Candy canes brought together in a shape of a heart.

The first taste of the sugary piece of candy is sweet,

You crave for more of that sweetness.

Thinking you will get the same taste,

You grab another piece.

Then it starts getting bitter with each savor,

Not what you expected, not satisfying anymore.

However, you keep longing for another

Knowing that it will only get worse.

I noticed this with me as well, I settled with the feeling.

The anticipation to get what we first had is dreadful

Yet, we stay in this forever in this circling loop,

Believing we will get different results.

We were just a bunch of kids when we met,

I wonder how our decisions turned into regrets.

I guess we both don’t learn from our mistakes.
