Hereditary Horrors
Hereditary the movie
November 3, 2018
In the movie “Hereditary,” Annie Graham and her family learn about secrets from their ancestry after her mother’s death. However, this film is not only sad– it is a horror movie that is not for the faint of heart.
It starts off at a funeral in California for the family’s matriarch, Annie’s mother Ellen Graham. The main characters are Annie, Peter and Charlie Graham. Annie starts off the movie with the statement, “My name’s Annie. My mom died a week ago; she was a very private woman and she wasn’t all together at the end.”
The actors and actresses were all people new to the Hollywood scene. Toni Collette, who plays Annie Graham, did a great job in making sure the movie lived up to its horror category. She plays a relative in mourning suffering through so much trauma. Annie states, “She [her mother] had private rituals, private friends”. This is one thing that Annie did not know about her mother.
An actor that could have been utilized better was Milly Shapiro, who played Annie’s young daughter Charlie. Shapiro did an amazing job, but there should have been more parts of her character talking. It did not seem right that Charlie never spoke up for herself.
“Hereditary” was a creepy, bizarre movie. A scene that was especially creepy was when Charlie was in school and a bird flew into the window. Charlie was very close to her grandmother, and after she passed away, she did not talk as much.
From Hereditary, audiences can learn the normal things someone deduces from a horror movie–do not play with Ouija boards, stay out of cult related situations, and make sure the people you surround yourself with do not have it out for you.
Audience wise, this is definitely a movie for older teens and adults. Reviews should recommend this movie to mainly adults due to its violent outbursts and gory scenes. The rating of this movie is R. This film had the potential to be good, but the slowness, lack of conversation, and the gruesome events, made it not live up to its full potential.
