Field Day Fun

In past years, Brentsville has had a field day, but unfortunately due to a shortened school year, there will be not be one this year, much to the dismay of students and staff.

When asked, many students’ favorite activity on field day was the Frisbee competition. “I always thought the Frisbee tournament was the best part,” said 10th grade gym teacher, Ms. Tousha. However, English teacher, Mrs.Oberle, said “Lots of people like the Frisbee competition, but it was not my favorite. It was really a chance for the boys to take their shirts off and run around.”

There were other outdoor activities such as prison dodge, a game similar to dodge ball, shaving cream twister, water balloon fights, color runs, relay races, a bouncy slide, water gun fights, pie throwing contests, free ice cream, rock climbing, dodge ball, badminton, noodle games, corn hole, pie throwing contests, dodge ball games, and many indoor activities for those who preferred to stay indoors and out of the heat.

The general consensus among students and staff was that field day was a fun day and a much-needed break from the stress of SOLs and other end of year work. It was an opportunity to hang out with friends and blow off steam before senior exams began.

Unfortunately, with school ending on June 8—the earliest last day of school in recent history—there was no time to have field day this year between SOLs and Senior Exams as BDHS used to. Students will go without their end of year break.

“It’s usually the Friday before Memorial Day, but that’s when all the Senior work is due, and there are two Cambridge exams and usually we have the first week of June to get all that stuff handled, but this year we don’t,” said math teacher and organizer of the event, Ms. Dempewolf. “We didn’t have time for it.”

This year, an Ultimate Frisbee competition was held in an attempt to at least partially take the place of field day, but while it replaced part of the beloved event, it could not completely make up for the loss of field day for the  students and staff who missed it, especially because not all students and staff were involved.

Ms. Dempewolf hopes to bring field day back in the future. “We were bummed too,” she added.
